TWO POINTS

The Bench and Sofa

How are two completely different points similar? Or how are two similar points different? This brief is the study of two spaces which will both evolve into an outcome which combines them either by similarity or difference. The spaces can be broad or very small, the point is to explore the little details or one aspect of the space and to translate it into a design of some sort.

The design element can extend from an info graphic to a photographic exploration, a system, a brand, a social design, a way to communicate what the space is to a broader group of people. A way to even attract a viewer to an unknown location or to invite a stranger into a personal surrounding. Sometimes the smallest, forgotten spaces are the most intriguing.

The spaces I chose was firstly a bench in a street, secondly my living room as they both display ways of sitting yes one is public the other private. I eventually narrowed my two points to simply the bench and the sofa as it is interesting how two very similar objects are vastly different. I also became interested in the production or materials used for the objects as one depicts comfort whereas the other is stability, I found it an interesting task swapping the materials and exploring how this changes the object. The final outcome was the creation of three typefaces. One from the bench forms, one from the sofa and the last being a complete comparison and combination of the two points.
